Children's Performing Theatre (CPT) was started in 1990 by Addie Forbes in the Old Fire House Theatre. It later moved to the Powerhouse Theatre inside the Roger T. Sermon Center in Independence, MO, where it has been since. We have progressively grown into an organization that reaches from Independence to many surrounding cities.
CPT works with children ages 5 to 15 to put on a variety of plays and musicals. We welcome all levels of experience – from those who have never performed, but are interested in theatre and performing, to those who have several performances under their belt. Our goal is to teach children to enjoy the performing arts and instill confidence and self-esteem. We provide costumes and sets for the performances, so there is little to no cost to our actors.
In September, we hold auditions for a performance in early December. We hold auditions again in January for a performance in late February/early March. Those are performances with children ages 5-15. Then in May, we hold auditions for a combined performance with Encore Theatre of Independence for a performance in July. Ages in that performance are 12 and up.
Summer Fantasy is a workshop taught by CPT staff. It is a series of classes held for 6 weeks in May/June. There are various levels and the goal is to give children more experience with theatre operations, stage directions, and developing their public speaking voices. At the end of the workshop there is a showcase performance for families to enjoy. Summer Fantasy is not only a lot of fun, but a great opportunity for children to gain confidence and experience to perform.
CPT would love to have your family join us! Please use the Contact page to reach out if you have any questions. Follow this website and our Facebook for updated performance and audition information.
