One of the most frequent things parents ask is what to have their child prepare. While there are numerous monologue books available at the local library and bookstores, many can also be found online. The key to a good monologue for your child is one that showcases their unique gifts. Not every monologue works for every child. A monologue can also be created from a favorite book. Age appropriate is key.
We are looking for articulate, high volume level, animated children who can personify the character they are portraying in 1-2 minutes. A monologue is typically performed in a standing position and stays in the same general area. Your child should be able to bring the character to life with facial expression, dialect and appropriate hand gestures that look natural and not rehearsed. Here is a sample of a great child audition monologue:

While singing is not required for plays, when we do a musical, we will ask that any child wanting a lead part to sing about 16-32 bars or 1 minute of a song. Unless otherwise specified, a song from a musical is preferred. This should be sung with a backing track with no other vocals so that your child's voice stands out. Singers should be loud and articulate with appropriate body movement for the piece. (Children 8 and under who are not trying out for a solo part are allowed to sing an a Capella children's song such as Twinkle Twinkle little Star or similar) Here is a great example of an audition piece:
